15W-50 has historically been a viscosity recommended for high performance engines, and is used today primarily in motorsports racing where engines are stressed due to high revving and heat. 5W-50 oil which is especially suited for a wide variety of motorsports applications, towing and other severe service situations. It is also suitable for use in many high-performance turbo-charged or supercharged engines.The numbers refer to the weight and thickness, or viscosity, of the oil. Motor oil gets thicker when it’s cold and thinner when it heats up. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, and the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperatures.
